This week we’re hearing from Dr Jan Bellows. Dr Bellows is an eminent veterinary dentist who is the author of a number of dentistry textbooks. In this interview we go over his thoughts and experience with VETIGEL, an amazing vet med supply to have on hand as a veterinarian.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Dr. Bellows has been using VETIGEL® for over 3 years in 300-400 cases, including a wide range of species, even a gorilla, showing his confidence in the product along with its compatibility amongst many species.
  • After trying other hemostatic agents like powders and gelatin sponges, Dr. Bellows firmly believes that VETIGEL® is the superior option, citing its precision and effectiveness.
  • Dr. Bellows uses VETIGEL® not only for dental extractions but also for oral mass removals, skin biopsies, and tongue lesions, demonstrating its versatility in veterinary care.
  • In all his cases, Dr. Bellows has never encountered infections or complications with VETIGEL®, reinforcing his trust in the product's safety and reliability.

How long have you been using VETIGEL for, and how many cases have you used it in?

"I’ve been using VETIGEL for around 3 years, and I estimate I have used it in 300-400 cases. I have used it in a wide range of species, even a gorilla"

What other hemostatic agents have you used prior to using VETIGEL?

"I’ve used the hemostatic powder. It did stop the bleeding, but it’s very messy. The powder goes everywhere. VETIGEL® you can place exactly where you need it, and it works very quickly.
Have also used gelatin sponges. They are not as fast as VETIGEL®, and when you remove it, you remove the clot and bleeding starts again.

In my opinion VETIGEL is the only one to use. I make sure I have it available for all extractions."

What are the benefits of using VETIGEL?

Veterinarians appear comfortable with bleeding, but it isn’t necessary to let patients bleed. VETIGEL® is easy to use, stops bleeding in seconds, and so prevents unnecessary blood loss.

It saves time, and more importantly saves aggravation. Less stress for the veterinarian. By which I mean that if you have VETIGEL® readily available then you can be confident that you can stop any bleeds that may occur.

Other than dental extractions, are there any other procedures you find VETIGEL useful for?

"Oral mass removals and skin biopsies. Also tongue lesions, which can bleed profusely. You can use saline soaked gauze to hold the VETIGEL® in place"

    Dr Bellows, any closing comments?

"I’ve never had a problem with VETIGEL®. No infections or complications.
And I am always happy to help anyone with advice."
