KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Effective Hemostasis for Enucleations: Dr. Sigmund finds VETIGEL® particularly useful in enucleations, as it fills the entire orbit and stops bleeding almost instantly by sealing oozing areas around the socket.
  • Ease of Use Compared to Alternatives: Unlike Gelfoam, which can be pushed out by hemorrhage, VETIGEL® stays in place effectively, making it easier to manage bleeding in challenging areas.
  • Improved Efficiency and Confidence in Surgery: By enabling quicker control over bleeding, VETIGEL® helps make procedures more efficient, reducing both surgery time and stress for the veterinarian.
  • Highly Recommended for Other Veterinarians: Dr. Sigmund would recommend VETIGEL® to his peers, as it enhances control over bleeding and supports smoother, more confident surgical procedures.

How long have you been using VETIGEL®?

"Fairly recently, became aware of it in the last few months, so have just used it a few times so far."

What do you like about VETIGEL®?

"I’ve used it for enucleations, and it is so easy to use. The VETIGEL® fills up the whole orbit, which is great because you tend to get a lot of blood oozing from around the socket rather than singular blood vessels. VETIGEL® is able to contact these oozing areas to help clot them at once. It creates a seal and the bleeding stops almost instantly."

How do you use VETIGEL® in enucleations?

"I’ve previously used Gelfoam, but that can be pushed out by the hemorrhage, or coated by more significant hemorrhage making it less effective. VETIGEL® is like the consistency of hummus. After removing the globe, I inject the VETIGEL® to fill the orbit and pat it in place with a wet gauze. I then remove the eyelids and conjunctiva. After it’s been in place about 5 minutes, I remove most of the VETIGEL® using a saline soaked gauze. I then irrigate the orbit well, watch for any bleeding, and then start my closure."

So you’re going to continue to use VETIGEL®?

"Yes. I think it’s a great tool to have in your belt for those cases where bleeding is more significant."

Would you recommend it to other veterinarians?

"Definitely, it means you can perform an enucleation with the confidence that you have more tools to help control bleeding. This means the procedure can be efficient, which is obviously of great benefit to the patient and your stress levels as a surgeon."

Would you recommend VETIGEL® to other veterinarians?

    "Yes, definitely."
