"When I first heard about VETIGEL® I was really interested. Like many veterinarians I had rarely used hemostatic products because they weren’t readily available in the OR when you needed them. But also, although there are a range of products, their advantages were not significantly outweighed by the challenges of using them. Traditional hemostatic products are slow to stop bleeding, and they become an integral part of the clot. There is therefore little perceived benefit over using gauze and pressure. However, this also means that we are accepting blood loss, which can be detrimental to the patient in terms of circulating volume and unnecessarily prolonged procedure time.
VETIGEL® is a paradigm shift. It’s very easy to use, it’s flowable and therefore conforms to the geometry of a wound, and it literally stops bleeding in seconds. The fibrin patch that forms underneath it doesn’t adhere to the gel or integrate with it. This means the chances of bleeding re-occurring are greatly reduced. So, it’s something that’s definitely worth having available in the OR. For some procedures, such as multiple dental extractions, enucleations and mass removals, its use should be considered as routine.
The first time I used VETIGEL®, we had a 7-year-old sighthound (Greyhound/Saluki cross) who was also epileptic. Unfortunately, she needed some teeth extracting. After examination under anesthesia, 7 teeth were extracted. I swabbed the blood from each socket immediately after tooth removal and then applied VETIGEL® with the attached Precision Accessory. There was very little bleeding, and there was no staining of the head. The anesthetic was also shorter than it would have been without using the product. This showed me the real advantages of using VETIGEL® in routine dental extractions. I would recommend it to any veterinarian performing surgical procedures. It stops bleeding, shortens operating times, and saves lives."
