KEY TAKEAWAYS
|
How long have you been using VETIGEL®, and in how many procedures have you used it?
"Fairly recently, became aware of it in the last few months, so have just used it a few times so far."
What do you like about VETIGEL®?
" I’ve been using VETIGEL® for about 18 months and have used it in around a dozen procedures so far."
What do you like about VETIGEL®?
" The fact that it works! When I’ve used it, it stops bleeding immediately. It’s easy to use, and stays in place unlike some other hemostatic products."
Tell me about some of the procedures you’ve found benefited from the use of VETIGEL®?
"Dental extractions, tumor resection in the abdomen, cholecystectomy, nasal mass biopsy, cruciate, and a sialoadenectomy. Have also seen it used in an enucleation."
What else can you tell me about your use of VETIGEL®?
" It’s great for hemostasis when doing surgery in highly vascular procedures, and it improves visualization of the surgical field. I think it’s always worth considering the Tenets of Halsted (see below), and I think it’s worth considering an additional one, be swift as this benefits tissue viability. VETIGEL contributes to the speed of procedure as well as the reduction in blood loss.
Halsted’s Principles or ‘8th principle’ be swift – tissue viability.
Tenets of Halsted
· Gentle handling of tissues
· Aseptic surgery
· Anatomical dissection · Control Of Hemorrhage
· Obliteration of dead space
· Use of minimum quantity of suture material · Avoidance of suture tension
· Immobilization "
What other areas do you think it should be considered for?
"I’d be interested to see how it works in thrombocytopenic animals, and those with other coagulopathies.”
Would you recommend VETIGEL® to other veterinarians?
"Definitely, without a moment’s hesitation. It should be in the emergency box, but also it really has a role in a range of routine surgeries. The more often you use it, the more adept you’ll become with it.”
